Just wanted to share a great resource for all you working in academic libraries. PBwiki, http://www.pbwiki.com, is the tool that I use for the Civil Law Dictionary Project and the LSU Reference Manual. This is a very useful tool for legal reference, incredibly easy to use and set up and cleaner now that they have removed the ads from educational wikis. If you would like to know how to use this tool, please, feel free to contact me.

The SEAALL Community Service 2007 Charitable Campaign

SEAALL has adopted the libraries of the East Baton Rouge Parish School System as the recipients of SEAALL’s 2007 charitable giving campaign. This Baton Rouge school system has accepted many new students forced out of New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina, and its libraries need donations of money and books to keep up with its suddenly-expanded student body...

The Community Service Committee encourages all SEAALL members to take advantage of this charitable giving opportunity, even if you are not planning to attend the SEAALL Annual Meeting in Baton Rouge. Members may give to these needy libraries in two ways:

1. Write a check to the “East Baton Rouge Parish School System” and note “Library Services” in the memo line. The Community Service Committee will have a table in the exhibit area at the Annual Meeting, where you may stop to write your check.

If you are not going to be in Baton Rouge, you may send your check to: Terrye Conroy, Coleman Karesh Law Library, University of South Carolina, Main & Greene Sts., Columbia, SC 29208.

2. Donate now via Amazon.com from a special SEAALL list of books, videos and other media needed by the libraries. The items you purchase from this list will be sent directly to our contact in the East Baton Rouge Parish School System. If given a choice, please choose new books (as opposed to used ones) to donate.

Go to www.amazon.com. Mouse over "Your Lists" at the top of the page. Then, choose "Wish List." Enter "SEAALL" in the "Find someone's Wish List" box, and our SEAALL 2007 wish list will appear.

Once you have retrieved the list, you can manipulate it in numerous ways. You can choose to view only "unpurchased" items to avoid duplication. You can also sort the list "by title" to read through an alphabetical list. Finally, you may want to view the "compact" list which allows you to see more titles at once.

SEAALL members, let’s show the libraries of the East Baton Rouge Parish School System how generous their law library colleagues can be! Please give generously so these school libraries may better serve their many students.

Law Librarians and Legal Technologists – Building Synergies in the Net Age

How many times have you, as a law librarian or a legal technologist, dealt with a person from the library or the technology department in your work environment who (you felt) was simply speaking a different language, or who you felt did not understand your goals and the needs of your users? Did you resolve the issue, or did you and the other person walk away, thinking, “X just doesn’t get it! I wish that I didn’t have to deal with X...”

Well, now’s your chance to make it better and your opportunity to participate in an institute designed to make the relationship between law librarians and legal technologists function more smoothly and effectively to meet the needs of your users. Join us (1) to explore effective ways to create more productive working relationships, (2) to foster an open and honest dialogue among information professionals, and (3) to dispel forever those stereotypes that get in the way of great outcomes and productive relationships, while also understanding that there are some legitimate differences. The 2007 SEAALL Institute will bring together law librarians and legal technologists from law firms, courts, law schools, and other institutions to discuss these issues. No More Fees for Museums

The Old State Capitol and the Old Arsenal Powder Magazine, two Baton Rouge landmarks, just announced that they would no longer charge admission fees... Louisiana Secretary of State Jay Dardenne, who oversees the administration of the two sites, abolished the admission fee there as well as at the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum in Shreveport.

The Old State Capitol, 100 North Blvd., is open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and from noon until 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. It now houses the Louisiana Center for Political and Governmental History and it is a short distance from the Baton Rouge Sheraton. The Old Arsenal Powder Magazine, near the New State Capitol on Capitol Lake Drive, is open from 9:00 a.m. unitl 4:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The Old Arsenal was built around 1838 and it was a staging area during the Mexican-American War and an important location during the Civil War.

Are you looking for something offbeat and "Louisiana" to do while at the conference? Then let me recommend Insta-Gator Ranch and Hatchery in Covington (about 70 miles east of Baton Rouge.)... Insta-Gator offers guided tours of the ranch (adults $12.00, children $8:00) where you will be able to see thousands of gators and learn all about them. Checkout their gatorvideo. These tours are great fun for children of all ages! Directions to the ranch can be found on their website.

Classical Guitar Concert in Baton Rouge

Classical guitarist David Tenenbaum ("(c)onsidered one of the most admired classical guitarists of his generation, David Tanenbaum was hailed by The New York Times as "a master of the instrument... played so musically and so expressively that the listener was led directly to the essence of each composer."") will be in Baton Rouge for a concert on Thursday, April 12th. The concert will be at 8:00 p.m. at the Manship Theater in downtown Baton Rouge, literally across the street from our conference hotel. There are two ways you can post photos to appear on the blog.

The first way is easiest if you don't have a lot of photos to post. You can post your photos directly to the blog by creating a new post and clicking on the add image icon then follow the simple wizard. Just like I did with my photo of the pelicans at the LSU lakes.

If you have a lot of photos... then you can set up a Flickr account, join the Mystic Krewe of SEAALL Group, post the photos there, and they will automatically link to this blog. Flickr is free and if you have a Yahoo account, you already have access to Flickr. To join the Mystic Krewe of SEAALL Group, email me at vicenc.feliu@law.lsu.edu and I will send you and invitation. After you upload your photos to Flickr, add your photos to the Group and then they will automatically appear in the Flickr badge on the right of the page.
